Residents have had their say after the expected opening date of a new seafront swimming pool was announced.

Sea Lanes, on the site of the former Peter Pan playground in Madeira Drive, Brighton, will feature a 50m heated outdoor pool and is set to open next spring.

It comes after a £2.5million loan was secured from Triodos Bank.

Plans will also see the opening of 23 carbon neutral modular units, which will house businesses including a bar, coffee shop, yoga studios, health and fitness facilities, plus retailers that fit with the “overall ethos” of the project, from February next year.

People were excited for the pool’s opening.

Deborah Paul said: “I think this is a brilliant idea especially for training.”

Elisa Bertorelli said: “Brilliant, can’t wait to swim in it.”

Sharyn Thorpe said: “Just what we need.”

Keith Bullivant said: “Absolutely brilliant news looking forward to a swim and a beer.”

Lucie Patricia Fuller said: “Great news.”

Diann Knight said: “It’s a great project for Brightonians.”

Sophie Madelene said: “This is very exciting.”

Some did express their doubts on the project.

Henry Cheung said: “I wonder how people would feel swimming with a hundred seagulls pooping in the pool with you.”

Bren Mahoney said: “Been reading about this seemingly for four to five years, will be of little benefit for most people.”

Joseph Rudwick said: “This is the kind of thing I laugh at when I see a swimming pool next to the sea.”

Andy Oliver said: “No swimming pool has ever not lost huge amounts of money over time. It will need constant subsidy.”

Jacek Nawrath said: “Looks bit small.”

Karen Palfreeman said: “A pool by the sea? Probably because the seas so dirty.”

David Ewing said: “Unless the Madeira terrace is sorted out, anything along there won't improve the setting.”
