Plans for a former gasworks site have been updated.

An amended planning application for 565 homes in buildings ranging from three to 12 storeys has been submitted for the former Brighton Gasworks off the A259 in the east of the city.

The site is two hectares, about the size of three football pitches, near Black Rock, Brighton Marina and East Brighton Park.

The land is owned by National Grid and the developer, St William. It has two redundant gasometers and other gas infrastructure.

Currently, the land is being used for storage and parking.

St William amended the application after reviewing feedback from council officers and comments from residents.

According to the council, communal and public spaces will be provided.

There will also be almost 3,000 square metres dedicated to so-called “commercial space”.

Computer-generated imagery from the developer shows people gathered in outdoor seating areas and children using a play area.

The plans also list a food-growing area, seafront garden and amphitheatre seating.

The site would be accessed via Boundary Road and Marina Way.

St William has published details of alterations to the plans, which now include 226 affordable homes making up 40 per cent of the housing on offer.

Of the 226, 115 will be for renters and 111 for shared ownership.

A full public re-consultation has now begun and will run until January 11 next year.

So far, the plans have had 654 comments from the public and the council is now asking for more.

The plans are controversial, with many people concerned about the size of the buildings and potential loss of sunlight for people living nearby.

Anyone can provide comments at the planning application stage.

The council said planning officers will consider all comments in their assessment, along with expert advice and representations from neighbours and other stakeholders.

No date has been set for a planning committee decision on the proposals but it is not expected before spring 2023.
