Studies show that racial inequality is one of the biggest barriers to pupils attaining success at school. The UK’s education system today is racially unequal, and this creates disadvantage. This is visible in the demographics of our schools, when you consider a third of pupils in both primary and secondary are from an ethnic minority background — but according to a UCL study, 46% of schools do not have a teacher from an ethnic minority background

Looking deeper we can see that Black/Carribean students are more likely to get excluded than white students. We see that Black girls are twice as likely to be expelled than white girls. Reportys show that not only is the education system racially unequal in the proportion of teachers from a Black, Asian or ethnic minority background but also thet 'racism is deeply embedded in schooling'. This is reflected in the views of 49% of young black people who think that racism is the biggest barrier to attaining success at school.

Seven out of eight black students have felt like they had to change their hair in order to appear more like others at school. 95% of students said they have witnessed racist language at school.

A lot students say racist comments without knowing the impact, thinking it's a joke and not much of a big deal and teachers very easily dismiss it. Never dismiss reports of racism or bullying – be clear you take this seriously and acknowledge their feelings. Listen to them and involve them in your response. Encourage all staff and students to be vigilant to bullying, prejudice and abuse – whether face to face or online, and to report any concerns.
