One of Brighton’s most historic buildings is opening its doors to the public for the first time in 15 years.
Once playing host to international bands such as The Rolling Stones, The Beatles and in its latter years – Mecca Bingo. The Hippodrome has been left abandoned and in disrepair for the last 15 years.
Do Not Obstruct is a contemporary art gallery based in Brighton which holds exhibitions in lesser-seen areas of the city.
In October, the former Grade II* listed cab run under Brighton railway station was turned into a unique space by the gallery.
Owners Kirsteen Adams and Graham Freeman said the exhibition was a “huge success”, so much so that they have opened a permanent gallery in Kemp Town Village before exploring future options to host an exhibition in the city.
As many as 50 artists are expected to display their work in the Hippodrome’s ‘exquisite’ Palm Court this weekend as part of the Do Not Obstruct exhibition.
Kirsteen and Graham have been preparing for this exhibition in the disused space over the last week.
“We’ve been knocking down walls, putting some floorboards in," said Graham.
“If anything, we’ve been contributing to the restoration of the building
“It might be the last time to see the Palm Court as a relic. We have this wonderful opportunity before it’s renovated”
“Putting on the show is what we’re about.”
Kirsteen is an ex-theatrical stage manager, and she says that her background in theatre has helped her organise this event.
“It’s like getting your props and doing your props list, sorting out your contact sheet, planning, set design.”
She feels privileged to host the event in the Hippodrome, saying: “It still has that beautiful authenticity which is so unique”
The exhibition is “one of those shows where we’re not going for one style or medium.”
“We just love everything that’s coming in.”
Brighton Beer have partnered with Do Not Obstruct to bring their mini brewery to the exhibition, and members of the public can visit this weekend.
It is open between 10am and 8pm on Saturday and from 11am to 5pm on Sunday.
