A Drag Race star struck down by the dreaded Brighton curse has spoken ahead of appearing at RuPaul’s DragCon UK next year.

Joe Black, who was knocked out in the first round of the second series of Drag Race UK, will attend the event, which takes place from January 6 to 8 at the ExCel London in Greenwich, for the very first time.

The avant-garde retro cabaret queen is looking forward to meeting fellow queens.

“It’s going to be quite exciting being amongst all that hustle and bustle,” Joe said.

“Also, the first time so many drag race UK people have been in the same room.

“I’m excited to meet Kam Hugh from Drag Race France. We’ve spoken online and I love their aesthetic. So I’m excited to meet them finally.”

In terms of outfits, Joe will be opting for a bright aesthetic: “Most probably neons.

“Leaning into that neo noir vibe. Wearing a trench coat maybe? Flasher vibes.

“But then I open the coat and it’s just hundreds of hamsters and I release them onto the convention floor.”

The 32-year-old also opened up about the struggles of being a performer during the Covid pandemic and the effect the pandemic has had on audiences coming to shows.

“I missed audiences the most,” Joe said.

“That visceral connection with a live audience.

“I feel like people appreciate it more. I’ve felt that most shows have had a new fire behind them since we’ve re-joined the world.”

The Brighton-based queen also shared hopes for the future of drag.

“Variety and representation of all types of art within it,” Joe said.

“Kings, queens and everything in between.”

It has been a busy year for the queen who toured in October and November with a new solo show called Club Cataclysm.

He has also launched his new podcast Joe Black: Meets.
