As a car driver and a cyclist I've been shocked at the animosity shown by car drivers towards the development of cycle paths in our city. It's true that they may not be well used at the moment but that's because the message about it being safer to cycle will take some time to filter down. When I ask my friends why they don't cycle the vast majority say it's because it's too dangerous with all the traffic. Many have bikes in the shed and have just got out of the habit of using them.

In Copenhagen, where I lived for many years, there were safe cycle paths everywhere and car and bus drivers were very bike-aware.

Everyone I knew had a bike and almost no one had a car.

When I moved back here the reverse was true and cyclists are in the minority. So let's promote more cycling and make it safer for cyclists.

We may then find with fewer cars on the road that those still driving will have less need to complain about the narrowed roads.
