The family of a man killed by a careless driver has called for a change in the law to be rushed through.

Father-of-eight Victor Backshall died at the wheel of his Reliant Robin in a crash on a 60mph stretch of country road near Henfield.

He was driving at about 29mph when a Toyota Corolla turned across the B2116 in front of him in November 2006.

Businessman Graham Glyn, 56, of Henfield Road, Albourne, was cleared of causing death by dangerous driving.

Instead a jury at Hove Crown Court found him guilty of the less serious offence of careless driving.

The maximum sentence for causing death by dangerous driving is 14 years in prison while careless driving carries a maximum fine of £2,500, but a ban is not mandatory.

Glyn was fined todayrday £1,500, banned from driving for a year and ordered to take a driving test before he gets his licence back.
