A father who is rowing across the Atlantic Ocean to raise money for charity has spoken of eating reindeer stew and jelly babies on his Christmas Day at sea.

Matt Garman, of Rother Road in Seaford, is part of a three-man team who are spending their holidays in the middle of the sea as part of a six-week voyage.

Matt, joined by friends Neil Furminger, 57, and Steve Wooleley, 46, tucked into their festive meal as they continue on their journey, which will continue into the new year.

Matt, 53, the skipper of the Ocean Dadventure group, said: “It’s been tough to consume the calories needed and the Christmas Day reindeer stew tasted much like a beef stew.

“Steve is favouring a reindeer soup whereas Neil and myself have more of a sweet tooth and keep our calories up with Jelly Babies and Haribo.

“There were pork scratchings and nuts also on the Christmas Day menu for their high calories. We each need to consume about 6,000 calories per day.

“We did take a half-bottle of whisky for Christmas Day but chose cans of fizzy drinks instead. Whilst we’ve been lucky and haven’t experienced seasickness, we don’t fancy the alcohol.”

The group are midway through the voyage which began on December 12 after setting off with no prior experience.

Ocean Dadventure are one of 30 teams taking part in the Talisker Whiskey Atlantic Challenge, which is expected to last until the end of January.

The group are completing the journey in a specially made rowing boat to help them across the Atlantic Ocean.

Throughout the race the trio are raising money for a number of charities including the Wolo Foundation, who help support the families of people in Sussex suffering from cancer.

The Argus:

So far the group have raised just over £13,000 towards their chosen charities, with their goal being to raise £50,000.
