Three local heroes have been honoured for their contribution to their communities.

Clare Cook, Jeffrey Garrard and Khristina McCormack were given the Community Hero Award for their work supporting homeless people and raising money for charity.

The trio received their awards after a call for nominations in the summer as part of celebrations for the Queen's Platinum Jubilee. The honours were presented by Worthing Mayor Henna Chowdhury.

Councillor Chowdhury said: “It’s very important to recognise those who give their time tirelessly to give back to the community.

“What Claire, Jeffrey and Khristina have done, and continue to do, is so inspiring. More people should know about the superhuman efforts of our unsung heroes, so to be able to show just a token of our appreciation through this small gesture is fantastic.”

Clare Cook was nominated for her work with Worthing’s Street Outreach team as well as her volunteer work with Worthing Soup Kitchen.

Carl Sutherland, who also helps the Street Outreach team, called Claire an “unsung hero of the community” for her work with the homeless community.

Khristina, who also works with Worthing Soup Kitchen, was nominated for raising money for the charity. She also helps by cooking breakfast and evening meals as well as delivering food parcels and sourcing essentials such as sleeping bags and coats.

Karyn Picker, who nominated Khristina for the award, described her as “a true guardian angel for many”.

Jeffrey Garrard was recognised for his work with the British Red Cross, who he has raised funds with for most of his adult life.

Jeffrey, who has taken on obstacle courses and sponsored swims for the charity, was inspired by going on the Red Cross’s Activenture holidays as a child and wanted to make sure that children had the same opportunities as he did.
