A child and several adults were rescued from vehicles stranded in flood water in the early hours of the new year.

Fire crews from Lewes and Brighton were called to Barcombe to help six adults and a child who became trapped after several vehicles got stuck in the early hours of this morning.

A van and a car were stranded deep in floodwater along the road.

Barcombe Mills Road remains closed and impassable due to the flooding and the stranded vehicles blocking the road.

A spokesman for Lewes Fire Station urged people to not drive around the road closure signs in place along the road.

East Sussex Fire and Rescue confirmed that the drivers of the vehicles had moved the barriers aside in an attempt to drive along the road.

Flood warnings are in place for Barcombe Mills, as well as several other parts of Sussex, following rain yesterday and overnight.

Those in affected areas are urged to move family, pets and vehicles to safety and to move possessions upstairs or to a safe place.

Flood warnings are in force for the following areas:

  • Alfriston
  • Barcombe Mills
  • Hellingly and Horsebridge
  • Langney Haven at Langney, Willingdon and Eastbourne, including Shinewater Park
  • Mock Bridge to Betley bridge, near Shermanbury on the River Adur
  • River Rother at Fittleworth
