Dozens of swimmers braved cold conditions and took a dip in the sea to start 2023 with a splash.

Around 30 people gathered at Shoreham Harbour yesterday morning and donned swimming costumes to raise money for the RSPCA to help the charity continue to look after animals in their care.

Another group also took the plunge near Brighton Palace Pier to welcome in the new year.

Jenny Eden, branch manager for RSPCA Sussex North and Brighton, said: “We were thrilled with the number of people who chose to start their New Year with a sea dip to help animals.

“Although the water was a bit chilly, it was a really invigorating start to 2023 and a great way to help a local charity at the same time.”

The event was a first for the charity, with plans already in the works to take the plunge again for the start of 2024.

On New Year’s Day, 108 animals were being cared for at the shelter, including dogs, cats, rabbits, ferrets, mice and guinea pigs, alongside another 150 in their reptile rescue centre.
