It was a book, then it was a film, then it was a musical and as of the 25th November, it is a musical film. The story of ‘Matilda’ has captivated both the literary and entertainment industry since its initial release in 1988. ‘Matilda’ explores the complicated life of an extraordinary young girl, during which we see her suppress the antagonists of her home and school life.

Roald Dahl’s tale has proven to be an exponential success, with its musical adaption reigning the Cambridge Theatre in London’s West End since 2010. The musical adaption acted as inspiration for the new film, with 12 of the 16 musical songs present, including the fan favourite ‘Revolting Children’ which has accumulated almost 21 million listens on Spotify alone.

Dame Emma Thompson, an ever-present actress on British television, didn’t disappoint in her role; successfully embodying the nefarious character of Miss Trunchbull, particularly with her impeccable rendition of ‘The Hammer’.

Alongside Thompson, the children attending ‘Crunchem Hall’ were resemblant of professional dancers at such a young age; the final number ‘Revolting Children’ showcasing their immense talent. The performances display utter synchronisation, similarly to what can be expected on a West End stage. One of these, Alisha Weir, cast as Matilda, clearly resembled the character of Matilda that the audience would have known from either the book, the film or the musical.

A perfect addition to the new film is British actress,  Lashana Lynch. Previously seen in numerous Marvel movies, Lynch took on the role of ‘Miss Honey’ in the 2022 remake - to put it bluntly, you can expect to be captivated during the song, ‘My House’.

The Netflix film is sure to have done justice to the classic story. It is currently available to watch at many local cinemas.
