Brighton has ranked highly in an American travel company's list of the top ten coolest places to live in the UK.

The city came third, beaten only by London and Portsmouth in first and second place respectively.

Nomads Nation dubbed Brighton "open-minded" and praised the city for its number of LGBT-friendly establishments.

It mentioned the city's famous nightlife and music scene.

In the rankings, Nomads Nation wrote: "For a cheaper alternative to Brighton centre itself, Hove is a quieter option and there are still plenty of pubs and restaurants to be found here."

The travel company said the Lanes have "everything you could ever want".

It listed pros and cons to the city, with the pros being:

  • Liberal attitude
  • Amazing beach to chill on
  • Varied nightlife

In its cons list, Nomads Nation said: "It can definitely get expensive to rent and it might not give the big city feel."

The rankings said: " Days can be spent in Brighton browsing the vintage shops, antique stores and fashion boutiques of The Lanes, tucking into a vegetarian all-day-breakfast, or gazing at the iconic skeleton of West Pier as you sit on its stony beach listening to the waves."

It also mentioned the Great Escape festival as a chance to see the best of what the UK's underground music scene has been plotting.
