Guitar legend Jeff Beck, known as one of the most influential rock guitarists of all time, has died aged 78.

Jeff Beck rose to prominence in the 1960s with the Yardbirds, replacing Eric Clapton, and then fronted the Jeff Beck Group with Sir Rod Stewart.

The British musician, who lived in Wadhurst, was known as the “guitarist’s guitarist” and was ranked in the top five of the Rolling Stone’s list of 100 greatest guitarists.

His family posted on social media last night about Jeff’s death on Tuesday.

The post read: “On behalf of his family, it is with deep and profound sadness that we share the news of Jeff Beck’s passing.

“After suddenly contracting bacterial meningitis, he peacefully passed away yesterday. His family ask for privacy while they process this tremendous loss.”

Tributes have poured in from many of his contemporaries following the news.

Sir Rod Stewart said: “Jeff Beck was on another planet . He took me and Ronnie Wood to the USA in the late 60s in his band the Jeff Beck Group and we haven’t looked back since.

“He was one of the few guitarists that when playing live would actually listen to me sing and respond . Jeff, you were the greatest, my man. Thank you for everything . RIP.”
