As we hit the middle of January, many people taking part in Veganuary will be searching for a restaurant catering to their plant-based needs.

One that ticks this box is Purezza in Str James's Street, Brighton, which offers fresh vegan pizza delivered to your door. As part of its collaboration with delivery chain Deliveroo, we tried some of their pizzas in The Argus office, and they did not disappoint.

As we tucked into the animal-free offering, the biggest compliment we could give the pizza is that we simply could not tell they were vegan.

One of the biggest struggles for vegans can be to find a good plant-based cheese. With Purezza’s vegan margherita, it does not matter what the cheese tastes like; the rich tomato base and the wholegrain dough provide a quality taste which would rival any pizza.

In Veganuary, meat substitutes often take centre stage and on the Purezza menu this is no different.

Take the meatball marinara pizza, for example. The meatless take on the staple topping tastes almost like real thing, and you would be hard pressed to know the pizza was vegan.

For a hit of spice, the pepperoni or nduja pizzas may be the right choice for you. The Italian spreadable sausage adds a nice kick to a pizza that is well balanced.

With the pepperoni, we found the fake meat to have more flavour than the real thing, making the pizza a pleasant dish that we would certainly eat again.

While most of the meat substitutes were very good, we had some concerns with the meatless salmon. Despite being very close in taste, the texture was somewhat lacking, and we felt that this did not meet the expectations set by the others.

Even if fake meat is not your thing, Purezza has lots of pizzas which put the veggies at the heart of the meal.

One offering, the All the Seasons pizza, features high-quality ingredients such as artichokes and smoked beetroot.

The consensus from our team was wholly positive; the smoked beetroot and artichokes added a lot to the pizza. Even members of the team who did not expect to like the flavours were blown away by the combination.

The same can be said for the Parmigiana Party pizza, topped with smoked aubergines and a fake parmesan crumb. This was a favourite in our team, as the smoky flavours on  proved well-balanced.

Last but not least was the pesto pizza, which has a balsamic glaze drizzled on top. The glaze added a sharp tang and the flavours all mixed well without overpowering each other.

Overall, these pizzas celebrate plant-based ingredients rather than being limited by them and we would certainly eat them again.
