A taxi driver has slammed National Highways for “taking the mickey” with its closure on the A27.

The eastbound section of the A27 at Lancing was first closed following a collision involving four vehicles on Tuesday night.

It was then kept closed between the A2025 at Lancing and the A283 at Shoreham after a water main burst and there were safety concerns over groundwater running onto the road from the surrounding area and freezing.

The closure has caused huge disruption in the county, with some commuters saying they have spent several hours in queues.

One resident of South Street in Lancing said they cannot go anywhere in their car as it takes “an hour to go 200 metres”.

Drivers have been forced to use the Coast Road.

National highways advised drivers to follow the hollow diamond diversion symbol:

  • Exit the A27 eastbound at Offington Corner (A24)
  • Join the A24 northbound and continue until the junction with the A283 at Washington
  • Join the A283 eastbound and continue southbound to then re-join the A27 eastbound at Shoreham

But Simon Cassidy, from Shoreham Airport Cabs, said there is “no issue” on the road and said he cannot understand why it is still closed.

“There is no ice on the A27,” he said.

“It’s just sludge.

“They’re taking the mickey.”

Mr Cassidy captured video footage which shows water pooled on the side of the road and sections of “sludge”.

In the video, Mr Cassidy takes viewers on a tour through the road and can be heard saying “it’s just a puddle”.

A spokesman from National Highways said: "A closure is in place on the eastbound A27 near Lancing for safety reasons due to a dangerous combination of flooding and freezing temperatures leading to ice forming on the carriageway.

“Contractors are on-site and we'll be in a better position to provide a full update as to when the road will be reopen again soon."

Drivers have experienced days of disruption due to poor weather conditions this week.

The A26 also remains closed for a second day due to flooding and ice.
