A painting of a Sussex landmark is to feature as part of an art exhibition celebrating the best things about being British.

Beachy Head near Eastbourne has been included in a display by Francis Salvesen, titled The Joys Of Being British.

The artist wanted to draw a contrast between the natural beauty of the area and its “haunting history”.

Francis, a fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, said: "I wanted to capture the beauty of Beachy Head and the height and danger above the clouds.

“It's an extraordinary and special sight to see the clouds below the cliffs and, through them, the sea crashing against the rocks."

Beachy Head stands at over 530ft tall and offers stunning views over the English Channel.

But the cliff is also a common site for suicides, with regular patrols completed by local chaplaincy teams.

The Joys Of Being British exhibition will include a number of paintings of quintessentially British subjects including an NHS nurse, playing conkers, and cheese-rolling.

Other paintings in the collection include Brian Blessed acting in William Shakespeare’s King Lear.

The Joys Of Being British exhibition will be held at Mall Galleries in London from March 13 until March 18.
