The fire service has provided an update after a thatched cottage went up in flames.

The house caught fire at around 4pm in Pond Lane, Worthing, and was ravaged by the blaze which required six fire engines to put out.

Pond Lane was closed while emergency services put the fire out. 

West Sussex Fire and Rescue confirmed there were no injuries at the scene.

A spokesman added: "Please continue to avoid the Pond Lane area of Durrington while we tackle this house fire. Local roads are closed causing congestion.

"Durrington residents are advised to close windows and doors due to heavy smoke coming from a nearby house fire.

"Please avoid the area around Pond Lane where we are currently in attendance."

Crews from Worthing, Lancing, East Preston, Shoreham and East Sussex crews from Brighton attended.

Firefighters will remain into the evening to damp down any hot spots.
