Two dogs have been seized a month after they brutally attacked a cavapoo in a quiet residential street.

The dogs, two American XL bullies, have been seized by Sussex Police after a cavapoo was attacked in Kemp Town, Brighton last month.

Hugo, a two-and-a-half-year-old cavapoo, was rushed to the nearby Coastway Vets in Freshfield Way after he was mauled by two dogs.

Witnesses said they thought Hugo was dead as one dog had him by the scruff of his neck and "shook him like a rag doll."

At the time, Sussex Police launched an investigation and ordered the owner to keep the two dogs muzzled and on a lead in public and not left unattended in public at any time.

They decided not to seize the dogs at the time, and Detective Superintendent Rachel Carr said: “We understand this was a distressing incident - not only for the victim, but for the wider community.

“As neither of the dogs are banned breeds and have no previous history of aggression, a decision was taken to impose safety restrictions rather than seize and potentially destroy them.

"This was overseen by our force lead for dangerous dogs."

However, the dogs have now been seized by the police.

In a new statement, DS Carr told The Argus: "Our priority is to keep people safe.

“Following a report of a dog being attacked by two dogs in Brighton last month, we imposed strict safety measures to avoid further harm to the public.

“This included keeping the aggressor dogs muzzled, on a lead and attended to in public at all times, as well as securely enclosed at their home address.

“In the wake of new information, and a review of the initial investigation, the two dogs have now been seized for further safety assessments.

“We are committed to carrying out thorough investigations with public safety paramount, and will always act proactively on any new information to ensure the best outcomes for victims and our communities.”
