Staff of a pub have expressed “shock and great sadness” after the landlord died while on holiday.

Adam Odling, landlord of the Dover Castle in Southover Street, Brighton, died in Portugal on January 27 at the age of 49.

The pub has been closed temporarily following the news, with a sign promising to reopen at some point.

Details of a memorial for Adam have yet to be announced.

A sign in the window of the pub by staff said they were sharing news of his death with “shock and great sadness” and “Charlie the cat is missing his dad, but is being well looked after”.

A range of floral tributes has been put on display by the pub, along with cards from well-wishers.

One card from two residents who live on the street said: “May you rest in peace. You were such a lovely man and added so much to our street - you will be greatly missed.”

Another message said that Adam’s death “leaves behind a hole in our community”, while a card signed by customers and friends from nearby Grove Street simply said: “There are no words”.
