London Road, Balcombe, still closed following lorry crash and fire

London Road near Balcombe is still shut after the lorry overturned and landed in a nearby garden.

The accident happened on Friday.

Balcombe residents said the road is undergoing repairs following the crash which sparked a large emergency service response.

Many residents took to social media to ask when the road would be opened, with one speculating that the closure could last “a couple of days yet”.

The stretch of road on the outskirts of the village was closed over the weekend and remains shut this morning.

London Road is closed from the High Street junction to the Crawley Lane turning. There are signs diverting drivers.

Dramatic drone pictures showed the extent of the damage from the crash.

The overturned lorry and car were pictured being doused in foam by firefighters. The fire spread to telegraph lines and the porch of a nearby property.

A spokesman for West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service said on Friday: “We were called at 9.31am this morning to reports of a road traffic collision on London Road at Balcombe between Stone Lane and the B2110.

“Joint Fire Control mobilised fire engines from Crawley and Burgess Hill to the scene.

“Upon arrival they found a collision involving a car and a cement mixer, with both vehicles alight and the fire spreading to nearby telegraph lines and the porch of a nearby property. Fortunately none of the occupants of the vehicles were trapped.

“Sussex Police and the South East Coast Ambulance Service are also in attendance, and BT have been requested to the scene.

“London Road is expected to remain closed in both directions for some time. Drivers are urged to avoid the area.”
