Caroline Lucas has launched the Green Party’s campaign for the upcoming local elections in Lewes.

The Green MP for Brighton Pavilion visited activists in Seaford to launch the campaign for the elections in May, in the hopes of electing more Greens to Lewes District Council.

Ms Lucas also went to Seaford beach, where there have been reports of raw sewage discharge, and heard first-hand reports about the untreated sewage that has polluted local rivers and seas.

Ms Lucas said: “It was fantastic to see such a big turnout at the event and the energy and commitment towards making the local Green Party the largest party on Lewes District Council.

“Local Greens have already done so much work on ensuring cleaner water, including making the council the first in the UK to hold a water company to account on sewage discharge from new developments.

“The local elections are a vital opportunity to elect more Green councillors and deliver the change our communities and climate need over the next decade.”

Ezra Cohen, Seaford campaigner and resident, praised the visit and said: “Caroline Lucas talked about some of the amazing work Greens have done - insulating local housing, making council tax fairer, supporting the most vulnerable through the cost-of-living crisis and standing up for residents against a broken planning system.”

A total of nine Green councillors were elected to Lewes District Council at the last election in 2019, with the party also winning the popular vote.

Voters across most of Sussex will cast their vote to elect new councillors on May 4.

For the first time, people will need to provide a form of photo ID with them at the polling station in order to cast their ballot.

Accepted forms of ID include a driving licence, a UK or EU passport, a blue badge, or an EU national identity card.

Those who do not have a suitable form of ID can apply for a free “Voter Authority Certificate”, which can be used for UK elections and referendums.
