Firefighters have explained why they might be spotted at a tower block in the city later this morning.

East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service told members of the public not to panic as "lots of firefighters and fire engines" are set to descend on a tower block in Lewes Road, Brighton, from 10am.

The service is carrying out exercises across the region to "improve the way it responds to fire emergencies in tall buildings".

Assistant director for operational support and resilience Hannah Scott-Youldon said: “As we learn from national and local incidents we are always improving the way we respond to emergencies.

"In East Sussex we have a great many residential tall buildings and it is our job to ensure that all residents in our community keep themselves safe from fire and reduce the risk in their homes.

"We are continuing to do a lot of work to support buildings to improve the safety for their occupants.

"As a fire and rescue service we have recently delivered the latest up-to-date training to all of our firefighters and these exercises will allow them to enhance their training."

Up to six further training exercises will be taking place across Sussex over the coming weeks, in Hastings, Eastbourne and Brighton.

A spokesman for East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service said: "We will keep people informed of dates, as and when they are happening, via our social media channels."
