Passengers have been told to delay travel as all lines are blocked after a person was hit by a train.

The incident took place between Gatwick Airport and East Croydon.

As a result, there are severe delays and cancellations to Southern, Thameslink and Gatwick Express services going through these stations.

A spokesman for Govia Thameslink Railway, the operator in charge of Southern and Thameslink, said: "It is with great sadness that we report a person has been hit by a train between East Croydon and Gatwick.

"All lines are blocked between these stations while the emergency services work to deal with this incident."

The operator said there is "major disruption" and passengers have been told to delay travelling.

Trains cannot run between East Croydon, Redhill and Gatwick.

Passengers are told use another route and to expect a delay of at least 90 minutes.

Some trains will terminate before they get to the area, and others will be severely delayed or cancelled.

Where possible, shuttle trains will run between the South Coast and Gatwick and a limited number of trains will be able to run between East Croydon and London.

This will also cause major disruption to trains through central London on the Thameslink network.

Passengers can use their tickets to travel on the following at no extra cost:

  • Metrobus on any route, including buses between Horsham, Crawley, Gatwick and Redhill
  • Brighton and Hove Buses around the Preston Park, Hove, Shoreham, Brighton and Lewes areas
  • Southeastern between Hastings, Tonbridge and London
  • Compass Travel buses, including Route 32 around the Redhill area
  • South Western Railway between Southampton / Portsmouth Harbour, Guildford and London Waterloo, and also between Dorking and London Waterloo

Disruption is expected until 7pm.
