Trains to Brighton could be up to an hour late due to a signalling fault.

Services from Bedford and Cambridge towards Brighton have been affected by the fault which is causing southbound services to be delayed.

Rail operators have now also warned that some late-running trains may call at fewer stations to cut the delays, with others potentially cancelled.

A spokesman for GoviaThameslink, who operate services on the Brighton Mainline, said on Twitter: “A signalling fault between Thornton Heath and Selhurst is disrupting some Southern and Thameslink services on southbound lines.

“The signalling fault is now severely affecting some of our services, including Thameslink services from Cambridge/ Finsbury Park towards Brighton and Thameslink services from Bedford towards Brighton.

“We are now expecting your journey may take up to one hour longer. Some late-running trains may be cancelled or revised to call at fewer stations en route.”

Passengers are also being advised to leave extra time for their journeys in order to reach their destinations on time.

Some trains are thought to be waiting at red signals between stations as a result of the fault.
