A pub in the city is set to call last orders for good as it prepares to be demolished for five houses.

Residents are mourning the closure of The Hanover pub in Queens Park Road, Brighton, which is scheduled to close on Saturday, March 25.

The pub has been a staple of the community for decades and its closure marks the end of an era - with a pub being on the site since the 1800s.

The freeholders of the Hanover, Graderich, were first given permission to knock it down and build houses there in 2002.

However, they have submitted several planning applications for the site in the last 20 years, with the current permission granted in 2005 for nine houses to be developed on and around the site.

Four of these in Down Terrace and St Luke's Road have already been built, and the remaining five houses will be built on the site of the pub and its remaining garden.

The leaseholders of the Hanover, Indigo Leisure Ltd, are now selling the pub to another developer in order to make way for the housing development.

An event to say goodbye to the pub is being held at 8pm on March 23.

The pub is located near the Montreal Arms in Albion Hill which had its historic green tiles stripped off, causing uproar in the community.
