Thousands of households are without power in Sussex following a safety issue on the network.

There have been a number of power cuts in the city, with one affecting more than 300 households in one area.

UK Power Networks said power had to be turned off due to a "safety issue" on its network.

A spokesman said: "Due to a safety issue on our electricity network we have had to turn off power in the RH15, RH16 and BN6 areas."

They also gave an update on the current situation.

"As of 10.37 here is a summary of the issue -  we became aware of the fault at 08:42," they said.

"The cause is an emergency isolation our engineers have carried out for safety in the Burgess Hill, Haywards Heath and the surrounding areas.

"The current status of the issue is that we have had to switch off electricity in your area in order to carry out repairs safely.

"As these decisions are made quickly it's not always possible to inform you ahead of time, the estimated timeframe to have power back on is 11.30 to 12.30.

"We'll be in touch when we have more information."

One resident said there has been no power or mobile phone connection in Hassocks and the Burgess Hill area.

Another said: "I know there’s not a lot they can do about it but it’s still frustrating, we’re all so reliant on power for the internet these days and when it’s out you quickly feel very isolated. I just hope they get it back on soon.”
