Armed police closed a city centre street while they attended to an incident.
The units were called to a report of a knifepoint robbery in Preston Street, Brighton, yesterday afternoon.
A spokeswoman for Sussex Police said: "Once on scene it was established that the report was false and the officers were stood down."
