Just over 20 years on since the Big Beach Boutique and Fatboy Slim was back in his adopted hometown for the first of two live performances.

And what a show it was.

It may not have been Brighton beach, but the internationally renowned DJ, real name Norman Cook, had a sea of fans bouncing in the palm of his hand on Thursday night.

The packed Brighton Centre erupted as he came on stage and commenced what would be a wall of relentless sound for two hours - no chatting, no messing.

He performed with a lot of trademark Fatboy Slim energy and was, of course, bare foot.

It was honestly very difficult to decide who enjoyed it more, Fatboy or the audience.

It was like one massive party.

He played a string of his old classics including Praise You, Right Here Right Now and the Rockafeller Skank but with fresh twists to keep us entertained.

Songs including Can’t Stop Me know and Staying Alive were artfully woven into the big dance beats.

The Hove native played his new collaboration with Rita Ora, featuring her giant face - reminiscent of the giant EE advert Rita Ora who took on London - which is a remix of his hit Praise You.

No expense was spared for the visuals and effects, which were certainly in full force.

We were treated to massive celebrity faces, dancing Christopher Walkens, flames, lasers, confetti, streamers and psychedelic Fatboys.

The musician showed solidarity with Gary Lineker during the set following the recent row between the sport pundit and the BBC over his social media use.

Lineker’s face was one of many to be displayed on the giant screen above Fatboy.

There were other political statements sprinkled throughout the gig too.

Greta Thunberg appeared, as well as a world on fire towards the end.

There were also plenty of homages to the city, with the DJ displaying Brighton and Hove Albion star Solly March on screen, to the roaring approval of the audience.

He also brandished an Albion scarf on stage.

A Pride flag ended the performance with the message “only love can conquer hate”.

I walked out of the centre with my hearing slightly worse for wear but having thoroughly enjoyed myself.

Fatboy, I have to Praise You.

Four out of five stars.
