Passengers flying from Gatwick have reported severe delays following a technical fault.

Flyers were met with long queues due to a problem with self-check-in machines, with some claiming to have waited in line for around 90 minutes.

Some travellers took to social media to vent their frustration, with one describing the situation as “absolute carnage”.

The airport warned customers earlier this morning to expect delays.

In a tweet, Gatwick said: “Please be prepared for some delays at check-in due to a technical issue affecting our self-service bag drop machines.

“We are working with the supplier to rectify this as soon as possible.”

Passengers have been advised to contact their airline if they have any concerns or queries about the situation.

A spokeswoman for Gatwick Airport said: "The airport is running well and passengers should plan their journey as usual.

"There may be some delays due to air traffic control strikes in France."

Staff shortages and flight cancellations caused holidaymakers jetting off to face severe delays to get through security.

The airport told The Argus that it was now “well resourced” and had managed to deal with other busy periods, including the Christmas holidays, “without issue”.
