The full extent of the psychological and physical attacks endured by a woman have been revealed after her abuser was jailed.

Vile Shaun Kent, 31, of Sandhurst Road in Brighton, routinely abused victim Darcy Bolingbroke over four years.

Darcy, 23, experienced sickening beatings at the hands of Kent, who also took control of her social media accounts in a bid to stop her speaking with other men – including members of her own family.

Bricklayer Kent would turn up at events Darcy was attending and behave threateningly and violently.

The events would sometimes be at l.ocations Darcy had not revealed to Kent, suggesting he was monitoring her movements.

And if Kent was unable to track his victim, he would bombard her with texts and phone calls.

Now, as Kent is behind bars for two years and eight months after sentencing at Lewes Crown Court on March 17, more information has been revealed.

Kent violently attacked Darcy’s recent surgery scars as they healed, leaving significant and long-lasting injuries.

He was arrested after the heartless attack in February 2019, but was released on bail, leading to yet further abuse.

Kent impersonated a friend of Darcy’s, contacting her to convince her to drop the allegations.

He arranged a meeting, and when Darcy arrived, she saw it was Kent in his car.

He was subsequently charged with engaging in coercive and controlling behaviour, causing actual bodily harm, intimidating a witness, sexual assault, and assault by beating.

Kent pleaded guilty to all charges except sexual assault, which the court ordered to remain on file after the hearing on March 17 of this year.

Darcy read an impact statement in court, in which she said: “There are still dark days and the feeling of sadness that I carry with me. I want Kent to know that he did not ruin me and that he in fact is, was and forever shall be a woman beater and a monster of a human being.

“I may still have to live with the memory of what you did to me, but I am a survivor of your abuse. I hope that you are never given the opportunity to do this again and I hope that no other women will have to suffer like I did.”

Investigations Supervisor Sharon Rintoul praised Darcy’s bravery at speaking out.

“The account shared by Darcy of her abuse at the hands of Shaun Kent demonstrates the devastating impact domestic abuse has on the lives of victims and their families,” she said.

“The bravery she has shown in supporting this investigation through to prosecution, addressing her abuser directly in court and seeing him put behind bars cannot be overstated.

“I would like to thank her for that bravery and reaffirm Sussex Police’s commitment to combating violence against women and girls, bringing perpetrators of domestic abuse to justice and safeguarding their victims.”
