A council is calling for more cleaners so it can reopen public toilets across the city.

Brighton and Hove City Council is on the lookout for more staff to open more of the city’s toilets.

The council has been refurbishing some of the public toilets and it expects recently refurbished sites, including Kings Esplanade, Daltons, Station Road and Saltdean undercliff toilets, to be handed back soon.

Sam Kay, one of the toilet cleansing operatives, has worked for Brighton and Hove City Council for three years.

He said: “I’m from London and people never really spoke to each other. Here, everyone’s happy and bubbly and it’s a lovely community.

“We work in different areas so we can help each other as a team and pick up each other’s work.”

The council hopes to reopen most public toilets over the next few months when all its positions have been filled.

The role the council is hiring for involves driving from site to site keeping the city’s public toilets clean, tidy and well stocked.

Other duties include sweeping floors, removing graffiti, emptying bins and removing drug paraphernalia safely.
