The lower jets on the Victoria Fountain are not included in plans to restore the water feature.

It was hoped that water would once again spray from the outer rim of the fountain towards the main tower structure, as it did when built in 1846.

Old photographs showing the jets have been shared on social media, with people saying they would like to see the jets return.

However, Brighton and Hove City Council confirmed it would cost too much money to implement.

A council spokeswoman said: “We believe the water jets were removed when the fountain was refurbished in 1990 and we have been looking into the possibility of reinstating them.

“Initial estimates for the work proved unaffordable, and we are continuing to work with the contractor and their specialist fountain subcontractor to look at options to reduce the cost.

“We are also looking at the feasibility of ensuring that the jets could be retrofitted in the future.”

It comes as yet another blow to restoration plans after it was revealed work would not be finished until after the King’s coronation next month.
