A closure on the A27 planned for this weekend has been postponed due to damage to month-long repairs to the bypass.

Parts of the road were due to be shut across the weekend as part of surfacing works around the New Monks Farm roundabout in Lancing.

However, after damage to a safety barrier on the Shoreham Bypass, the work will now be postponed as repairs continue on other sections of the road.

Following a crash on the bypass on April 29 repair works to the barrier forced one lane to be closed for some time, however this has now reopened.

A National Highways spokesman said: “There was due to be a closure this weekend on the A27 at Shoreham as the developers at New Monks Farm needed to carry out surfacing work on the new roundabout.

“This has been postponed due to damage of the Shoreham viaduct parapet nearby. Both lanes on the main carriageway are now open but the westbound off slip will remain closed until permanent repairs to the parapet are carried out and the diversion route requires the use of the eastbound carriageway from the Grinstead Lane roundabout.

“We will still be looking to carry out further maintenance works within the slip closure itself over the coming weeks then re-programme the closure for the developers at a suitable date after that.”

Delays of around 15 minutes have been in place in the area due to the lane closure which has meant backed-up traffic.

Repairs are expected to last between six to eight weeks while a “bespoke barrier” is manufactured and fitted.

Public figures have shared their relief at the closure being postponed, with East Worthing and Shoreham MP Tim Loughton saying: “Pleased to report the 72-hour eastbound carriageway closure planned for this weekend, 12-15 May, as part of the new roundabout works has been cancelled.”

The postponement will also be good news for Albion fans from West Sussex with many expected to be heading to London for Brighton’s crunch match against title contenders Arsenal on Sunday.
