A level crossing is closed until tomorrow after a tanker on the back of a tractor got stuck on the railway line.

The incident happened this morning at around 10.30am at Berwick station between Lewes and Polegate.

The tow bar appeared to be wedged into the track on the crossing which rail operator Southern said damaged the road surface.

The tanker was eventually freed by around 2pm and all lines reopened.

However, the crossing will be closed for vehicles and pedestrians until 7.30am tomorrow.

A spokesman for Southern Rail said: "A tractor pulling a tanker of slurry broke down on the level crossing this morning.

“It was removed in the early afternoon, and train services resumed after a safety check.

"Unfortunately, however, the trailer had damaged the road surface and the crossing cannot be opened to road or pedestrian traffic until around 7.30am tomorrow, once repairs are completed.

"While trains were halted, we were able to arrange some replacement buses and ticket acceptance on local bus services, but there has been considerable inconvenience to passengers and road users and we thank everyone for their patience."

There are no trains running in Sussex tomorrow due to an Aslef strike.
