A train has been clipped by a barrier after a car crashed into a level crossing this evening.

The road-going vehicle collided with a barrier in Broomers Hill Lane, Pulborough, just after 5pm on Monday (June 12).

It pushed the barrier into the path of an oncoming train.

Safety inspections are being carried before moving the train and reopening the route.

It means there are delays to Southern services running between Horsham and Arundel until at least 8pm today, with journeys expected to take around half an hour longer than usual.

A spokesman for the rail provider issued advice to passengers, saying: “We currently have several trains in the immediate area.

“If you are on these trains, please listen for advice from the crews onboard and speak to them if you need assistance.

"We are working with Network Rail, our response teams and fleet staff to deal with this situation as quickly and safely as possible."

The British Transport Police have been contacted for comment.
