Motorists were given a scare by a fake speed camera on the side of a road plagued by speeding.

The homemade speed camera, which is actually a nesting box for birds, surprised motorists driving past on the busy A road.

The nesting box was set up on the A272 Goldbridge Road which is used as a “racetrack” by bikers and drivers.

One motorist told The Argus: “Wow, at first I thought ‘I’ve never seen that speed camera before’.

“After closer inspection I realised it was a fake.

“I thought the local residents must be sick of the speeders to make such a good fake.

“It really does look like a speed camera, the only giveaway was that it hasn’t got the lines on the road.”

The fake speed camera was set up in Piltdown which is West of Uckfield.

People have complained of the A272 being used as a “racetrack” by bikers and motorists.

Sussex Police have previously worked to crack down on speeding in the area.

Residents in nearby North Chailey have previously signed a petition calling for a reduction to the speed limit in the area.
