A pub in the city centre has reopened after a refurbishment costing a quarter of a million pounds.

The Argus revealed earlier this month that The Sussex Yeoman, in Guildford Street, Brighton, was soon to welcome customers through the doors after its closure in January when the former landlord retired.

Now, with new boss Matt Short at the helm, the pub is back open with guests already popping in for a pint.

“As a proud local myself, I am delighted to have taken on the pub and give it a new lease of life, meaning it can continue to serve the community for years to come,” said Matt.

“The pub used to be famous for its Sunday roast and I plan on reinstating that in due course.”

Matt also runs O’Connor’s in Worthing and The Spanish Lady in Saltdean.

He has taken on the lease from Greene King pubs, which has around 2,600 in England, Scotland, and Wales.

The Sussex Yeoman was boarded up in January after the previous tenant retired after 18 years at the helm.

Greene King promised to invest “a substantial sum” to refurbish and modernise it, “enabling the new operator to relaunch it with a new retail offer, focused on craft beer, locally sourced wines and spirits, and a simple fast food offer”.

The chain said at the time: “We have plans to invest in The Sussex Yeoman and give this much-loved pub a new lease of life.

“It’s early days, but we hope to provide an update later in the year.”
