A Sussex wine is among a select few vintages worldwide to win a prestigious award.

The Ridgeview Rosé de Noirs 2018, a sparkling wine made from Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier, was awarded a platinum medal at the Decanter World Wine Awards.

The wine, produced in Ditchling Common, was one of just 125 wines globally to be award the top honour.

It comes as more than 30 Sussex wines were recognised as part of the international celebration with medals voted for by some 200 judges from 30 countries.

Talking about the platinum award-winning wine, judges commented on its “excellent colour with ripe, confected aromas with a strawberry fruit lift”.

They added: “A full palate, full of flavour, an oaked rosé in sparkling form with resolved tannins. A warm year yet handled well, tapered and elegant.”

The Rose de Noirs was also ranked as the best red wine in the UK and the best rosé in the competition.

Sussex was awarded 34 medals at the prestigious awards ceremony, now in its 20th year.

They included 17 bronze medals and 16 silver awards alongside the coveted platinum award.

Simon Field, regional chairman for the UK at the Decanter World Wine Awards, said two main things stood out about UK entries this year. “Firstly, the increase in both volume and quality of the still wines submitted, their provenance as varied as their quality was consistent," he said.

“The quality of the sparklers, secondly, continues to impress as the category takes on maturity; as the wines and winemakers alike take on a little more age it becomes increasingly clear that the long-held faith in such things has most definitely not been informed by misguided patriotism.”

The awards ceremony is described as one of the world’s biggest and most influential wine competitions in the world which involves input from master sommeliers and masters of wine. Over 18,250 wines were submitted from 57 countries.
