A KFC branch in the city has been investigated over claims cooking oil was being poured down kitchen sinks.

A whistleblower who worked at the fast food restaurant, in London Road, Brighton, reported the claim to Brighton and Hove City Council’s environmental health team.

He claimed to The Argus that more than 560 litres of cooking oil was “thrown down” the sink instead of being collected and recycled.

The council carried out an investigation.

The chairwoman of the council’s licensing committee, Councillor Emma Daniel, said: “Our environmental health team was recently made aware of concerns relating to KFC London Road.

“The team has investigated and the matter has now been resolved to our satisfaction.”

A spokesman for KFC said: “Operating responsibly is our number one priority. All oil used at our restaurant on Brighton London Road is routinely collected and recycled by Olleco, the biggest recycler of used cooking oil in the UK; and no blockage has been recorded at Brighton London Road, so we’re unsure where this has come from.

“We’ve been in touch with the local council, and they continue to be satisfied with the documentation and recycling practices we have in place.”
