A number of people have been arrested after a “large car meet” in the city centre.

Dozens of cars were spotted in Brighton yesterday evening as part of the event.

Residents described seeing a “constant flow” of cars, with as many as 100 “boy racers” meeting up.

One witness took to social media and said: “A lot of them were using the M23 like a racing track earlier”.

One resident said many cars "flew down Roman Road in Hove at about 50mph".

“Some even stopped when residents waved them to slow, then absolutely floored it,” they said.

Police said that while many taking part in the London to Brighton “seaside and sunset drive” were behaving, a “small few” were arrested and issued tickets for a range of offences.

A police spokesman said: “Officers have people in custody for offences including failing to stop and dangerous driving.

“Officers have also issued tickets for other driving matters including no number plates and due care matters.

“We want people to enjoy these events but also need people to keep safe.”
