A seafront will receive a multimillion-pound cash injection in a bid to draw in tourists.

The promenade about Newhaven’s West Beach is getting a new restaurant, two beach volleyball courts, an outdoor gym and a children’s play area.

Lewes District Council approved the £10 million scheme hoping the area can become “a magnet for residents and visitors”.

“This is a landmark development opportunity for Newhaven that has the potential to transform the West Beach promenade and provide a major boost to the local economy,” said leader of Lewes District Council Zoe Nicholson.

“While the plans are yet to be considered by the council’s planning committee, I can’t help being excited by the prospect of them becoming a reality.

“When you consider this development alongside the council’s work to create a new health hub in the town centre and our efforts to reopen The Marine Workshop, there is no doubt a new chapter in the history of Newhaven is beginning.”

The project is funded by a Government Levelling Up grant.

The Marine Workshop, in Railway Quay, Newhaven, is being brought back into use as a marine, commercial, exhibition and civic space with help from £1.3m in grant-funding from the Getting Britain Building Fund.

It was recently announced that East Sussex College will base its Marine courses and Creative Media Production course at the quayside building.

Councillor Nicholson added: “I’m delighted that East Sussex College Group is soon to move into The Marine Workshops and we’re getting plenty of interest from businesses too.

“We all want this building to become a hive of activity - whether it’s education, commerce or the curation of an arts exhibition, I want to give organisations in Newhaven the opportunity to thrive in this incredible building.”

It comes as the town’s 19th-century fort recently secured £5.8 million for restoration works.

The project at Newhaven Fort will see new gun emplacements and refurbished exhibitions.

Redeveloping the adventure playground is also part of the plan.

The new exhibitions will include details about the home front and D-Day with a restored barrack room.
