A councillor has slammed an MP who claimed that ticket office staff spend their time “sitting there twiddling their thumbs” amid plans to close sites.

Wealden MP Nus Ghani spoke on the radio about the plans to close rail ticket offices, adding that "the majority of time is spent not doing anything”.

Now, a Labour councillor has slammed Ms Ghani over the comments and called on her to apologise for the remarks.

Daniel Manvell, Wealden District Councillor for Uckfield North, said: “Nus Ghani's comments about train station ticket office staff are insulting and simply wrong.

“Ticket office staff already work extremely hard to support disabled passengers, and those with pushchairs and other needs.

“These changes are overwhelmingly opposed by majority charities and organisations representing blind, deaf, and other disabled passengers who know the value of our ticket office staff. Nus Ghani should apologise and retract her comments."

Rail bosses say the changes would help give more support to passengers but opponents to the scheme say it would negatively impact customer experiences.

Consultations on the plans have been underway and end tomorrow.

Ms Ghani’s office was approached for comment.
