Bus services will be diverted across the city this weekend as Pride returns on its 50th anniversary.

Road closures due to the Pride parade and village party in Kemp Town, Brighton, will cause disruption to bus routes travelling into the city centre.

However, those trying to get to the festival in Preston Park will be able to get a special shuttle service, with routes 500 and 600 operating to and from Preston Park from the Old Steine and the Waterhall Campsite.

Route 500 buses will run at least every ten minutes on Saturday from 2.30pm.

Single tickets on both routes cost £3, with return journeys costing £5.

Here are the details of the planned disruption to services:

Friday, August 4

The SeaLife Centre roundabout and St James’s Street will be closed from 9pm and won’t reopen until 8am on Monday, August 8.

All eastbound services that use St James’s Street will divert via Edward Street from the Old Steine. Coastal services from Edward Street will turn right down Upper Rock Gardens and Lower Rock Gardens to resume their normal route on the A259, The first stop to be served on the A259 will be Bedford Street.

All westbound coastal services will serve Bedford Street on the A259 and turn right onto Lower Rock Gardens and Upper Rock Gardens. Services will turn left onto Edward Street, where they will resume their normal route at the Old Steine.

Saturday, August 5

A number of road closures will come into effect throughout the day:

  • Old Steine: 10.45-14.30
  • Clock Tower North Street: 10.45-14.30
  • London Road/Oxford Street: 10.30-16.00 and 21.00-01.00
  • Brighton Station/Queen’s Road: 19.00-01.00
  • Preston Road, between Stanford Avenue and Preston Drove, will be closed all day.

Buses travelling eastbound turning at Churchill Square will terminate in Western Road and operate via Montpelier Road, Seven Dials and Dyke Road to Churchill Square.

Services from Lewes Road and Elm Grove will terminate at the Open Market between 10.30 and 16.00 and restart their service from the east side of The Level.

Services from Ditchling Road will terminate at the Open Market and restart from Union Road.

From 21.00, services from Lewes Road will not serve the Open Market, but will serve St Peter’s bus lanes. Services from Ditchling Road and Elm Grove will serve the Open Market and not St Peter’s bus lanes. Services to Lewes Road and Elm Grove will use the bus lanes and then serve The Level bus stop. Services using Ditchling Road will use the bus lanes and serve the temporary bus stop in Union Road.

All buses from the east and coast road services will terminate at either Park Street or the Bingo Hall between 10.30 and 14.30. During the day, when open, all services that serve the SeaLife Centre will divert via Lower Rock Gardens and Edward Street.

Sunday, August 6

From 11.00 until 22.30, the A23 Preston Road will be closed in both directions for the festival in Preston Park. During this time, routes 5 and 5A and Metrobus services 271 and 272 will need to divert via Stanford Avenue, Beaconsfield Villas and Preston Drove in both directions.

Diversions around the St James’s Street area will remain in place.
