I was interested in the excellent article about the former workhouse site at Southlands Hospital (The Argus, June 26). I too have attended site visits and consultation presentations by the preferred developer of English Partnerships, Crest Nicholson.
My fear is that minds are made up. I have been told that the refectory hall - the central section of the refectory block - is structurally unsafe and would not comply with regulations. Furthermore, it would be not viable for use as a community centre.
So many negatives. Could I be controversial and suggest the real reason is that it stands in the middle of the site?
English Partnerships acquired the site in 2005.
To date there has been little effort to protect these buildings from further damage. Much vandalism has occurred, although recently efforts have been made to erect a barrier around the site.
Readers should be aware that none of these fine buildings are listed, although Adur District Council designated the site as of local historic interest way back in 1993.
I understand that English Heritage has recently refused listing status for the entrance block building.
