I am inclined to agree with Councillor Geoffrey Wells when he says "arty farty" sculpture is a waste of money (The Argus, June 27).

Some of it in the recent past has been chosen by people who are not best suited to appreciate what is good or bad art. This results in wasted public money and a legacy of bad sculpture around the city.

The roundabout at Patcham was once a warren to "domestic" rabbits, that was always a delight to pass. Since the bushes have grown it has probably become home to other wildlife. I suggest that this roundabout is planted with wild flowers and shrubs, and, well managed, it would be a delight to see and some use to the environment. It would surely be an improvement to the "Welcome" sign on the other side of the road and would cost next to nothing.

With regard to proposals for sculptures on roundabouts, what about Brighton and Hove City Council doing something about the state of the seats along Marine Parade? Why doesn't it ensure that the streets are swept and littering offenders prosecuted?

That would make a better advertisement for Brighton than a couple of sculptures on roundabouts.

When I moved to Brighton seven years ago it was a place to be proud of and I enjoyed coming home down the A23. Now I am just weary at the thought of what I might find when I return. Brighton has so much to offer but sadly it is getting harder to find.
