Dramatic video has shown teams battling to save a whale stranded on a beach this afternoon.

The northern bottlenose whale washed up on the Sussex coast with coastguard and marine rescue teams working to keep it alive.

The whale, which is believed to be male, washed up on East Beach in Littlehampton earlier today.

A HM Coastguard spokesman said: “The Coastguard Rescue Team from Littlehampton is supporting the response to a northern bottlenose whale washed up on East Beach at Littlehampton today.

“The alarm was raised at about 1.30pm and the British Divers Marine Life Rescue are in attendance.”

Teams from the coastguard and the British Divers Marine Rescue team have been working to take care of the whale this afternoon.

Aerial footage showed the whale on the edge of the waves being splashed with water while laying on its side.

The teams later covered the whale in towels and poured water on it in a bid to keep it hydrated.

British Divers Marien Rescue were approached for comment.
