A cricket fan needed 64 stitches after he was smashed over the head in a street robbery.

The man was grabbed from behind as he walked along Preston Street in Brighton.

He had been dropped off by a taxi after enjoying a Twenty20 cricket match in Hove.

His attacker searched his pockets before hitting him over the head and leaving with cash and a watch.

Police believe a weapon was used and are asking anyone who saw the attack, at about 12.30am on Saturday, to help them catch the culprit.

The suspect is described as white, in his mid 30s, 6ft, medium build, clean-shaven with short dark gelled hair.

He was wearing a long-sleeved V-necked top with dark checks on a light background. He was last seen walking up Preston Street towards Western Road.

A second man who appeared to be with the suspect is described as white, also in his mid 30s, 5ft 10in, of medium build, clean-shaven with a skinhead haircut and light-coloured top.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Detective Sergeant Steve French at Brighton CID on 0845 6070999 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
