Peter Kyle has been given a new job in Keir Starmer’s shadow cabinet.

The Labour MP for Hove has been moved from his role as shadow Northern Ireland secretary to the new role of shadow science, innovation and technology secretary.

Mr Kyle will shadow Michelle Donelan, with a brief covering research, innovation and artificial intelligence.

Hilary Benn, MP for Leeds Central, will replace Mr Kyle as shadow Northern Ireland secretary.

Following his appointment, Peter Kyle told The Argus: "I couldn't say yes quickly enough when Keir offered me this exciting, important and complex role.

"Technology and science are crucial parts of our economy nationwide as well as Brighton and Hove.

"I want to learn from - and help grow - all the small and large businesses working hard to lead the world in their field.

"We have a lot of work to do to make sure we fully capitalise on all of the opportunities presented by technological progress and make sure we keep people, and especially young people, safe as technology evolves so swiftly.

"I can't wait to get started."

The reshuffle also saw deputy leader Angela Rayner appointed to the post of shadow levelling up secretary and shadow deputy Prime Minister.

The Labour leader’s decision to create a new-look team comes as he uses Parliament’s return from the summer recess to set out his vision for government, pledging not to raise income tax if he wins the next election in an interview with the Daily Mirror.

Peter Kyle is currently leading Labour’s campaign in the Mid Bedfordshire by-election, following the resignation of Conservative MP Nadine Dorries last month.

A poll from July put Labour four per cent ahead of the Conservatives in the constituency, with independent councillor Gareth Mackey third.

A date for the by-election has yet to be announced, but is expected to take place sometime next month.
