A person died after being hit by a train last night.

Services were halted between Horsham and Arundel from around 8.45pm yesterday (September 5) after a train struck the person near Amberley.

Police and paramedics arrived on the scene shortly after. The person was declared dead at the scene.

A spokeswoman for the British Transport Police said: “Officers were called to the line near Amberley station at 8.50pm yesterday (September 5) following reports of a casualty on the tracks.

“Paramedics also attended however sadly a person was pronounced dead at the scene.

“The incident is not being treated as suspicious and a report will be prepared for the coroner.”

Trains between Horsham and Arundel were suspended for the rest of the evening, with trains diverted via Haywards Heath and Hove.

The line reopened at 12.50am today (September 6).
